Eric Cantor Gay in All Religion Night Pride Month
With 2011 Los Angeles Pride debuting this weekend, Pride festivities are scheduled across the nation all month long to mark the fight for LGBT equality. Set aside as a time to celebrate the accomplishments and continuing struggles of LGBT Americans, Pride parades and festivities are already seeing their fourth decade of existence in major cities like San Francisco and New York.

The nation’s first major Pride event kicked off yesterday, with singer Macy Gray headlining the LA Pride main stage. Continuing on through Saturday are singers CeCe Peniston and Mya, with Estelle, Sam Sparro, and comic Margaret Cho closing out the weekend. In a fitting tribute to mark the legislative repeal of DADT, LGBT servicemembers have been designated the Community Grand Marshal of the parade.
Chicago Pride is unique in that Pride events are on-going all month, with an array of events (book clubs, BBQs, LGBT worship services, museum exhibitions) scheduled almost every day. The main stage and parade are scheduled for the last weekend of June in Chicago’s gay village Boystown, with dance divas Ultra Nate and Deborah Cox headlining.

Historically-significant Pride events in San Francisco and New York close out the month, both deeply rooted in the LGBT civil rights movement and activism.
NYC Pride emerged one month after the legendary brawl between police and LGBT patrons of the Stonewall Inn in 1969, marking the beginning of what became the gay rights movement. Today NYC Pride is one of the world’s largest, with the Rally culminating in Central Park. Damian Furtch, an openly-gay man who was brutally beaten earlier this year and has become a force in fighting anti-LGBT violence, is among the featured speakers.

Finally, San Francisco Pride carries the distinction of being the most popular and well-attended Pride event in the nation, with 2009’s celebration topping off at a record 1.2 million attendees. San Francisco held it’s first Pride in June of 1970.

The Trans March marks the start of this year’s celebration, occurring on the Friday before the last weekend of the month. The Dyke March – which features the famous Dykes on Bikes contingent – is held the next day, Saturday June 25. Later that evening the Castro District celebrates Pink Saturday, the area’s largest street party featuring music and dancing. Finally, Sunday sees the Pride Parade and Celebration – featuring Grand Marshal Chaz Bono and main stage headliner Sandra Bernhard – down Market Street and culminating in front of City Hall.
